Mamata Banerjee Expresses Shock Over Salt Lake Stadium Mismanagement, Orders Probe After Messi Event Chaos

Kolkata, West Bengal:
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday expressed deep shock and concern over the alleged mismanagement at Salt Lake Stadium during the much-publicised Lionel Messi event. Taking to social media platform X, nearly 30 minutes after the stadium was vacated, Banerjee publicly acknowledged the incident and announced immediate action.

“I am deeply disturbed and shocked by the mismanagement witnessed today at Salt Lake Stadium,” the Chief Minister wrote, as public outrage continued to grow over the chaotic scenes that unfolded at the venue.

Chief Minister Orders Probe Into Stadium Chaos

Following reports of crowd unrest, vandalism, and poor event coordination, Mamata Banerjee ordered a detailed probe into the incident. The inquiry will examine lapses in event management, security arrangements, ticketing processes, and coordination with local authorities.

Officials said the government will identify those responsible for the failures that led to the disruption, especially given the scale and international significance of the event involving global football icon Lionel Messi.

Apology to Lionel Messi Amid International Attention

Sources indicated that the Chief Minister also expressed regret over the embarrassment caused by the incident, especially as it unfolded during a high-profile international event. The chaos has drawn widespread attention on social media and international sports platforms, raising concerns about Kolkata’s readiness to host major global events.

The state government is reportedly keen to ensure that the controversy does not damage West Bengal’s image as a destination for international sports and cultural events.

Public Anger and Political Reactions

Fans and ticket holders voiced strong dissatisfaction, claiming they were subjected to confusion, overcrowding, and lack of communication despite holding valid passes. Many demanded accountability and refunds, while opposition leaders criticised the administration for alleged administrative lapses.

The issue has since escalated into a political flashpoint, with calls for transparency in the investigation and strict action against organisers found guilty of negligence.

Government Assures Corrective Measures

Senior state officials assured that corrective steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. They emphasised that large-scale events will now be subjected to stricter monitoring, clearer ticketing protocols, and enhanced crowd management systems.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to release further details on the findings and actions taken.
